Baptisms, Weddings & Funerals
The Ascension has an open policy with regard to baptisms (often commonly know as christenings) and it is possible to be baptised at any age. If you live in the parish, or have contacts with the Ascension in some other way, we would be happy to discuss baptisms with you. Please contact us and a member of our baptism team will make an arrangement to visit you and make the arrangements.
Baptism is a free gift of God for those who want to embark on the journey of faith. In baptism our lives are bound with Christ's that we might live in him and he in us. Baptism is the beginning of that life-long journey. It is important, therefore, that in considering baptism either for yourself or for those in your care that you are prepared to make that journey of faith and travel along with all of us who have already been baptised, namely, the Church.
Baptisms normally take place in our 10.00am services on the 3rd Sunday of the month or in an all-age service at other times. It is possible that several people will be baptised during the service.
If a child is being baptised, you will need to have a minimum of three godparents, two godparents of the same sex as the child and one of the opposite sex. You may though have as many godparents as you would like. A godparent MUST be baptised in order to fulfil this important role.
There is no charge for baptisms. If, however, you would like to make a donation to God's work at the church you will have an opportunity to do so after the service.
WEDDINGS, THANKSGIVINGS AND BLESSINGS
We would be very happy to conduct wedding ceremonies for anyone who lives in the parish or for anyone who fulfils a Qualifying Connection to the parish.
A person has a Qualifying Connection with a parish if that person:
- was baptised in the parish. (This does not apply where the baptism formed part of a combined service of baptism or confirmation); or
- had his or her confirmation entered in a church register book of the Ascension; or
- has at any time had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months; or
- has at any time habitually attended public worship in the parish for at least 6 months;
or a Parent of that person has at any time during that person's lifetime:
- had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months; or
- habitually attended public worship in the parish for at least 6 months; or
- a Parent or Grandparent of that person was married in the parish.
It may be possible to marry in church after divorce with the former partner living. This would need to be discussed on a case by case basis as each circumstance is unique. Please contact us to discuss.
We are also happy to conduct services of Thanksgiving for Marriage or Blessings after a Civil Marriage. Again please contact us to discuss.
It is not currently possible under law to conduct service of Blessings after Civil partnerships.
The Ascension is a modern church building holding about 120 people and provides an intimate and warm atmosphere where everyone can see what's going on. If you would like to have a look at the inside of the church, then just contact us and we can arrange a viewing.
We hold Funeral Services at the Ascension for anyone who formerly lived in the parish or who had some connection with the church. We are also to take services at the local Crematoria. Please contact your local Funeral Directors to make arrangements.
The Ascension also has a Book of Remembrance into which the name of your loved one can be transcribed if they had or if you have a connection to the church. The only restriction is that the date of death of the deceased needs to be on or later than 1st January 2008 (the date on which the parish was formed). If you would like to find out more information then please contact Doreen Fall on 01444 453492.
